600 Million Years of Cynon Valley
Geological History
Acknowledgements
I would like to thank Dr Colin Rees, a contemporary of mine at Aberdare
Boys Grammar School, for initially suggesting that I reviewed a geological
introduction for another document, the result of which grew like a massive
snowball, larger than either of us anticipated, into this work. His ability
to convert my text and diagrams into the web pages produced here is also
much appreciated and the final presentation owes much to his work. I would
also like to thank a former colleague of mine at the University of Bristol,
Professor Emeritus B P J Williams, later of Aberdeen University and now
resident in his home town of Swansea, for reviewing the proof stage of
the document and providing some useful inclusions.
Dedication
I would like to dedicate this work to the memory of the two men who sparked
my interest in Geology at Aberdare Boys Grammar school, Mr. Meirion T Jenkins
and Mr. Tom Evans. They prepared me well for subsequent university studies
which eventually led me into a most interesting and worthwhile career.
At a critical juncture during my school years the subject matter they offered
me combined with their classroom style greatly influenced the path I chose,
a decision I have never for one moment regretted. I can truly state that
they influenced my life for the better and I am eternally grateful to them
for so doing. I just hope that they would approve of what I have written
here.
